Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Throughout the rich and lengthy history of our nation’s sport, scoring the most points has always been the measure of the greatest players. Only three players have dominated the league and claimed the all-time title for NHL points throughout the past 60+ years, with Rocket Richard first leading until surpassed by Mr. Hockey in 1960, with the record completely obliterated by The Great One in 1989. Occurring on October 15th, 1989 in a contest between Gretzky and the Kings against his former team, the Edmonton Oilers, in his old home, Northlands Coliseum, Gretzky would flip a shot past Oilers goalie, Bill Ranford, with 53 seconds left in the game to stake his claim to history. Offered here, we present this pair of ticket stubs from the historic contest, box season ticket and box office versions, as well as a program, with everything having been graded.
Starting with the ticket stubs, the season ticket variation shows seat information at the top as well as the image of a Kings jersey and Oilers logo in the middle and bottom portions while "Game 3" is listed near the top as well (October 15th was Edmonton's 3rd home game of the season). For the box office stub, the front lists particulars including; opponents, venue, date, time, seat location and original purchase price. Both having been graded by PSA, the season ticket version has earned a mark of NM-MT 8, a POP 2 example with only one (1) ever having been graded higher by the company while the box office stub sports a VG-EX 4 designation over its label, a POP 1 highest graded example with only two (2) having ever been graded by the company. Additionally, both holders remain in excellent condition with only light wear via small scratches/scuffs. Also including a program from the game, a title of "Action Magazine" is seen at the top of the cover along with a purchase price of $3.00 while an image of Kevin Lowe is found underneath. Listing the date at the bottom of the cover and "Oilers vs Kings" at the right side edge, the back shows an ad for Safeway. Having been inspected by CGC, who have given the historical game program a mark of "FN 6.0" along with a "white pages" designation underneath, the holder remains in excellent condition as well, showing only a few light scratches/scuffs worth mentioning for accuracy.
Rounded out with a newsstand copy of Sports Illustrated from October 23rd, 1989, the first issue after the historic record had changed hands, also included are various newspapers from the day of and days after the record was secured, with everything remaining in good condition and showing just expected light wear from handling and age.
