The 30th edition of the tournament, taking place in Stockholm, Sweden from March 7 to March 17, 1963, the 1963 IIHF World Championships featured 21 nations competing in three groups, with Canada represented by British Columbia’s Senior A club, the Trail Smoke Eaters. Marking the last time that an Allan Cup champion would be chosen to represent Canada at the international affair, the Trail club would finish in fourth (4th) place with a record of 4-1-2 in 7 games played as the Soviet Union claimed the gold medal, starting their roll of nine straight championships at the event. Offered here, we present this Team Canada jersey worn by George Ferguson of the Trail Smoke Eaters at the 1963 IIHF World Championships. A wool construction garment in Trail's black, orange and white colours, a brand label from "Sparlings Sporting Goods" of Vancouver B.C. is found affixed to the interior left hip seam while the jersey itself measures out to roughly a modern size "46". Sporting a classic lace-up style collar, the front of the jersey is decorated with "Canada" in single layer black satin twill letters that have been placed and sewn down across the chest in a gentle arch while a layered satin twill maple leaf emblem that features embroidered details is seen sewn on underneath. Styled with a variety style "Trail Canada" patch over the upper portion of the left arm that featured beautiful chain-stitched embroidered details, the right sleeve and back of the jersey is accented with Ferguson's number "4" in a single layer black satin twill numeral that matches the letters spelling out "Canada" over the front. Showing areas of discolouration and fading throughout its entirety, heaviest around the collar on the front and behind the left armpit/upper left sleeve, the patriotic sweater also shows numerous un-repaired holes in both the body and sleeves along with some light stains/soiling and a couple of good sized stick marks over the front. Finally, it is also worth mentioning that the "4" on the right sleeve has faded/become discoloured and there is noticeable piling to the wool on both sleeves.
Accompanied by various photos and other pieces from the tournament, including images of Ferguson wearing the offered jersey against both Finland and the United States, a team photo postcard, a tournament guidebook and team roster plus more, also included is Ferguson's 1961 IIHF World Championships gold medal plus other items from that tournament and his career. A classic design of a goaltender minding his net with “1961” below graces the obverse of this attractive medal, encompassed by the words “Championnat du Monde” and “World Championships”, with the artist signing. The reverse shows the IIHF logo with “International Ice Hockey Federation” in English and French, along with “1er” stamped. At 2” in diameter, the medal has been encased in lucite at some point, which shows chunks missing at the top corners (heaviest on the right side) and yellowing. With the obverse appearing clean with no issues other than a couple of small dings around the edge, the reverse shares a story that is much the same as well as what appears to be some air bubbles that are trapped on the surface. There is also wear to the lucite other than the missing chunks including marks and scratches.
