Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024

Instantly recognized but the style of helmet he wore throughout his National Hockey League career, Butch Goring was regarded as the “final piece of the puzzle” in the New York Islanders dynasty of the early-1980s and a key cog in the wheel that helped them win four (4) straight Stanley Cup championships during that time. The Conn Smythe Trophy recipient in 1981 and inducted into the New York Islanders Hall of Fame in 2020, offered here is this photo-matched Islanders jersey worn by Goring during the 1981-82 campaign, New York's 2nd of four (4) straight Stanley Cup championships. A heavy-weight mesh construction offering made by Sandow SK, both brand and laundry labels are affixed to the inner collar, with the brand label displaying a heavily faded "91" that was formerly red in colour, as well as a partially faded size designation that appears to read "44" despite the jersey measuring bigger after quick check, closer to a "46" instead. Having had the Sandow SK logo heat screened over the reverse hem in white, the front of the jersey is decorated with a familiar Islanders team crest in layered tackle twill while the sleeves and verso have been styled with Goring's number "91" in dual layer white-over-orange tackle twill numerals. Having had "Goring" spelt out in matching style letters across the affixed matching mesh nameplate at the top of the reverse, the jersey displays excellent game-wear throughout including stick marks over the front, reverse and both sleeves plus board burns over both sleeves as well. Also showing a small red coloured board paint transfer mark just to the right of the "1" on the right sleeve at the bottom, the interior shows the remains of its original loop style fight strap and good pilling at the elbows.
Regarding the photo-match, the jersey has been matched to an image taken during New York's December 13th, 1981 contest against the Edmonton Oilers in Edmonton that shows both Glenn Anderson and Paul Coffey as the main subjects in the background but Goring in the foreground via his midsection, with the stick mark through the top of the "N" in the team crest visible. Though we don't see Goring's face or the number on his sleeves, Getty Image #55972079 (March 1st, 1982 vs Washington), taken during the same season, shows Goring using the same CCM gloves and Sher-Wood stick and shows a match to the stick mark at the top of the white section between the thumb and fingers on the right hand. An LOA will accompany.
