The first netminder credited with scoring a goal, Billy Smith spent 17 prosperous seasons in New York with the Islanders, winning 4 Stanley Cups along the way as well as being enshrined in hockey's house of holy in 1993. Spending his entire 680 game National Hockey League career in the blue and orange on Long Island, Smith would also be awarded the Vezina Trophy in 1982 and the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1983. Named one of the one hundred (100) greatest players in the history of the NHL in 2017, offered here is this Islanders jersey issued to Smith during his final season of 1988-89 that comes from the collection of former Islanders equipment manager, Terrence Murphy. An air-knit construction garment made by CCM, a Maska label that has had a size "56" brand designation penned to it in blue ballpoint pen is affixed to the inner collar while the CCM logo is embroidered into the reverse hem. Of note, research shows that the Islanders wore a mix of jerseys with and without a Syosset emblem embroidered into the reverse hem throughout the year. Decorated over the front of the jersey with an Islanders team crest in layered tackle twill and retaining its fight strap on the interior, the sleeves and verso have been accented with Smith's number "31" in dual layer white-over-orange tackle twill numerals, with "Smith" spelt out in single layer white twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Being offered as a game-issued offering due to only very light wear being observed in the form of a little bit of pilling at the end of the left cuff and a couple of very light puck marks at the bottom edge of the team crest, it is possible that the jersey was worn by Smith in either one (1) or a couple of games. A splendid example from the last year of Smith's career, the jersey comes accompanied by an LOA stating the origin of the jersey, signed by Terrence's son, Joe, at its conclusion.
