Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
A decade that saw only the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers win Lord Stanley’s coveted Cup, offered here is this classic trio of mid-to-late-1970s O-Pee-Chee hockey releases from 1976-77, 1977-78 and 1978-79. Starting with the ’76-77 ensemble, the 396-card checklist is paced by the RC of Bryan Trottier with this particular copy of card #115 displaying in the condition range of EX, the card shows light "snow" over its surface and a slight diamond cut that is worth mentioning for accuracy. For the rest of the set, presenting in the overall condition ranges of EX to EX-MT on average, the key cards include the likes of 70-Clarke (EX to EX-MT - slight border wear and a print mark at the left border), 91-Dionne (G to VG - surface is bubbly at the bottom right), 163-Lafleur (EX - light corner wear), 200-Dryden (EX - light corner wear) and 213-Orr (VG to VG-EX - corner wear). Additionally, the three (3) checklist cards all remain in their original unmarked state with the same story being shared by the team checklist cards #'d 132 to 149 as well, while the other star players in the checklist are found in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the assembly.
The ’77-78 set, lacking and real star rookie cards, is presented in an average condition range of EX-MT to NM throughout and includes the team logo subset cards that fall between #322 and #339 on the checklist. For the star cards, included are EX-MT to NM examples of 200-Lafleur (70-30 centering), 240-Dionne (60-40 centering) and 251-Orr while card #115 of Bobby Clarke is seen in the scope of EX to EX-MT with a tiny oil stain at the top of the reverse keeping it from a higher mark. Also including EX-MT copies of 100-Dryden (tiny ding at top left) and 105-Trottier (2nd card - slight corner fuzz), all the cards have a humidity curve that is worth mentioning for accuracy and the three (3) checklist cards are all found in an unmarked state. Additionally, the team checklist cards are all unmarked as well except for card #81 of the New York Islanders and the rest of the star cards present in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the release.
Finally, for the 1978-79 assembly, in the overall condition range of EX-MT to NM throughout, the set is paced by the rookie card of Mike Bossy, which is found in the neighbourhood of EX-MT to NM and shows with 70-30 centering that is worth mentioning for accuracy. Also including an EX-MT to NM example of Bossy's rookie record breaker card as the first card in the set, other notable key cards in EX-MT to NM shape include 50-Dryden, 90-Lafleur and 143-Federko RC (70-30 centering) while card #300 of Bobby Orr is slightly worse off, found in the vicinity of EX-MT due to a light print line and the infamous O-Pee-Chee cutting issues. Of note, all the cards in the set have a humidity curve to them while the set's three (3) checklist cards are all unmarked. Finally, the team checklist cards are also all unmarked and it is worth noting that card #246 of Greg Polis is creased.
