Competing internationally for Canada in numerous World Short Track Speed Skating Championships between 1990 and 1996, winning many bronze and silver medals during those competitions, Frederic Blackburn would also find himself on Canada's Olympic team at 1992 Albertville and 1994 Lillehammer, winning a pair of silver medals at his first Olympics in the 1000m mens event and the 5000m relay mens event. Offered here, we present this silver medal won by Blackburn at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France. Measuring 93mm in diameter and 10mm thick while weighing in at 185 grams, the medal was designed under the direction of Marie-Claude Lalique and was manufactured by the luxury French glassmaker that bear her name out of silver and Lalique's crystal glass. Of note, since Lalique did not engrave the specific sport for which the medals were to be given out for, it is unknown as to if this medal was awarded for his 2nd place finish in the 1000m event of the 5000m relay event. Featuring a design over the front that sees the Olympic rings superimposed over the Alpine Mountains while the border is inscribed with the Games emblem, laurel branch, and legend, “Albertville 92, XVI Jeux Olympiques D’Hiver / XVI Olympic Winter Games", the reverse side of the medal features the etched side of the same mountain valley design along with a plain border. Complete with its original long silver ribbon with a stripe at its center consisting of the five Olympic colors of blue, gold, black, green and red, it is worthy of note that the ribbon shows some staining and toning throughout from age. Remaining in an overall pleasing condition with some light scuffs and scratches to the surfaces and edge, the illustrious pieces comes complete with its original presentation box and velvet inserts that shows some tears to the edges/corners of the top cover and spotting plus fading to the interior velvet from age. Additionally, Blackburn's athlete ID badge from the 1992 Games will also be included, showing some surface scratches over both sides and yellowing to the edges but overall remaining in good condition. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the piece.
