Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Regarded by many to this day as the greatest hockey player to ever lace up a pair of skates, the name Gordie Howe is synonymous with the game loved and played by so many across the world. In a career that spanned over five different decades from 1946-71 and 1973-80, fans and players alike will still find Howe’s name near the top of the all-time leaderboards all these years later. Inducted into the hallowed halls of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972 and coming out of retirement a year later to join the rival WHA and take the chance to suit up with his sons Mark and Marty, Howe would find himself back in the National Hockey League for one more season as a member of the Hartford Whalers during the 1979-80 campaign. Offered here, we present this 2005-06 UD SP Game Used Edition "Signature Sticks" card of the man known simply as "Mr. Hockey". Pictured during his final NHL season as a member of the Whalers with "Mr. Hockey" listed below, a Whalers logo graces the bottom left corner while a gold foil serial number reading "5/5" is found at the upper left edge. Sporting a piece of a stick used by Howe that has been embedded into the front of the card, the swatch of wood displays part of the stamp from once Red Wings equipment supplier, "Olympic Sporting Goods" and Howe has signed at the left side with a black marker ink signature that displays without issue. Having added his "Mr. Hockey" annotation underneath the autograph, the card remains in excellent condition and sports just light touches of wear to the edges and corners that is worth mentioning for accuracy.
