Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/1/2024
Regarded by many to this day as the greatest hockey player to ever lace up a pair of skates, the name Gordie Howe is synonymous with the game loved and played by so many across the world. In a career that spanned over five different decades from 1946-71 and 1973-80, fans and players alike will still find Howe’s name near the top of the all-time leaderboards all these years later. Among the hobby's all-time classics and most attractive hockey cards are Gordie Howe's 1954-55 Topps and '63-64 Parkhurst issues, with Topps' inaugural eye-catching colors featured here in this group of cards hailing from the company's 1998-99 and 2000-2001 Heritage hockey releases. All displaying the same vintage image over the front, the same one that graced Howe's card in that 1954-55 set, the one 1998-99 card is a "Blast From the Past" autograph example that has "Certified Autograph Issue" stamped over the front in gold foil while Howe has penned a dark blue marker ink signature over the front that displays without issue. For the 2000-2001 cards, included are a pair of examples that have had pieces of seat taken from a chair that was once in the Detroit Olympia embedded into the front of them with one of the two originally not coming autographed but signed by Howe at a later time with a blue marker ink autograph that displays without issue while the other is from the "Arena Relics Autographs" subset and has also been signed over the front with a blue marker ink signature while having been hand serial numbered "17/25" in blue pen on the reverse. Finally, also coming from the 2000-2001 Topps Heritage release is a simple autograph card of Howe that also sports a blue marker ink signature that displays without issue. With the three (3) cards from 2000-2001 having had Topps holograms affixed to their reverses, all four (4) of the included offerings remain in excellent condition with just some light wear observed to the edges and corners that is worth mentioning for accuracy.
