Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Two of the best defenceman to ever protect a blue line in the National Hockey League and combining to play a total of 2557 games over the course of their careers, Paul Coffey and Borje Salming would both be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, happening in 1996 and 2004 respectively. Offered here, we present these sticks used by Coffey and Salming during their stints in Motown as members of the Detroit Red Wings. Both Sher-Wood made P.M.P. 7000 models that are in black/white and white/red colours, "Coffey 77" graphics are seen over the upper shaft of his stick while "Salming" is stamped in the same area of his. With both sticks retaining their original tape jobs over the handles/knobs, the Coffey twig sports its original white tape over the blade which he has signed on the forehand side with a blue marker ink signature that displays without issue despite some fading from age while the Salming stick has had its black wrapping removed at some point. Additionally, the Salming stick has red tape wrapped around the middle of the shaft as well. With the foil accent stickers intact over the lower shafts of both sticks, each shows good game-wear (heavier on the Coffey) via numerous marks and abrasions throughout the lengths of both shafts while other dark marks are observed over the lower shafts, heels and untaped sections of both blades as well. Additionally, the Salming stick sports black residue from its once applied blade tape and it has been scorched near the toe. Both sticks show wear to the underside of their blades which is heaviest on the Salming example and worth pointing out for accuracy.
