Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
The first of many promotions by the company throughout the following decades, Quaker Oats began issuing hockey photo cards of Montreal and Toronto players during the 1938-39 NHL season in conjunction with the “Maple Leaf Bantam Hockey Club” memberships. Offered here via this lot that includes 26 of the 30 photos that make up a complete set, the near-complete grouping sees each photo printed on heavy cardstock that measures roughly 6 ¼” x 7 3/8”. All featuring an attractive border along with a black and white image of the depicted player, the set is missing only those of Jonny Gagnon, Georges Mantha, Babe Siebert and James Ward for completion while also including extras, totalling five (5), of Turk Broda, Murph Chamberlain, Bob Davidson, Gord Drillon and Reg Hamilton.
For the first group of eleven (11) cards, including the likes of Broda, Apps, Horner, Chamberlain, Fowler, Kelly, Metz, Parsons, Thoms, Kampman and Boll all show characteristics of cards in the EX condition vicinity and do not show any creases but do sport minor rounding/wear to the corners. Additionally ten (10) of the cards in this group have the name and address of a former owner stamped on their backs with "1939" also penned to the reverse of the Kelly example as well.
For the second grouping, including the examples of Drillon, Hewitt, Drouin, Hamilton, the four (4) cards have characteristics of cards in the VG-EX to EX condition range and do not show any creases but do sport a bit more rounding and corner wear than the group 1 specimens above. Additionally, a 5th card is included in Group 2, picturing Bob Davison over the front, which also shows the same characteristics but has paper/glue residues on the four corners on the back.
Continuing on to Group 3, including the extras of Davison, Drillon and Chamberlain, all three (3) cards have tape residues on their upper edge, with the Davidson card having creases in that area as well. Despite their low technical grades because of the residues and creases that are seen, the trio still manages to display nicely.
For the Group 4 examples, totalling nine (9) cards and featuring examples of Buswell, Lorrain, Cude, Wentworth, Gracie, Haynes, Evans, Cain and Blake, all have pinholes at their top and bottom border areas with most exhibiting stains as well. Additionally, all nine (9) have an "X" hand drawn on their reverses and are technically low-grade specimens but still display well.
Finally, for the fifth and final group, containing the extras of Broda and Hamilton as well as Harvey Jackson's example, Broda has paper loss along the top and bottom edges from tape removal while Hamilton and numerous creases and surface wear. Lastly, Jackson displays with some surface wear, a few surface scuff marks and some small stains.
