Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Many collectors of pre-war material, as well as postcard enthusiasts, have always been fascinated and charmed by the black and white postcards that were issued in copies of the boy's magazine "Champion" beginning in January of 1936 in conjunction with the postcards featuring different players issued in "Triumph". Offered here, we present this complete set of 1936 Champion hockey postcards that features nine (9) of the ten (10) examples having been graded by either PSA or SGC. Starting with the graded specimens, housing the postcards of Marty Berry (PSA EX-MT 6 - POP 5 - Second highest graded), Bill Cook (PSA EX 5), Hooley Smith (PSA EX 5), Bun Cook (PSA VG-EX 4), Mush Marsh (PSA VG-EX 4), King Clancy (PSA FR 1.5), Auriel Joliat (PSA FR 1.5), Charlie Conacher (PSA PR 1) and Sweeney Schriner (SGC "AUTHENTIC"), all the holders remain in excellent condition with only a couple of small scratches/scuffs observed over some of them. Rounding out the set with a raw ungraded copy of the postcard that pictures Pep Kelly over the front, the included example is seen as being in the grade range of PR to FR because of creasing over the lower front and paper residue/glue stains on the reverse. Additionally, also included with the complete set are raw ungraded extras of both Bun Cook from the Champion set and Busher Jackson from the Triumph set. Both in the grade range of PR to FR due to having been glued into a scrapbook at one time, both show edge and corner wear as well while the Cook example has a pinhole in the top left as well. Additionally, also included with the lot is a vintage Champion Photo Album (not an album for the postcards) that shows heavy wear to the cover and spine while the pages on the interior are found in a better condition and show some light pages folds that are worth mentioning for accuracy.
