Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Fascinating, alluring and riveting are William Paterson V145-1 hockey cards, with the issue's history, its incredible lineup and the haunting images all contributing to the mystique and desirability. The first of two sets issued by the William Paterson Company during the Roaring Twenties and cataloged as "V145-1", hobbyists with experience are aware that cards could be collected and exchanged (a full 40-card set) for a pair of hockey skates, with the card of Bert Corbeau short-printed so as to lessen the number of prize redemptions. Void of the coveted short-printed Corbeau card, offered here is this collection of sixteen (16) 1923-24 William Paterson V145-1 hockey cards that includes the likes of HOFers Georges Vezina, Aurele Joliat, Babe Dye, Cy Denneny, Frank Nighbor and others. All having been stuck together at some point and separated in a way that caused paper loss and paper residue on the front and backs of the included cards, it is also worth noting that there is noticeable staining throughout the group in the areas that show the previously mentioned paper loss and paper residues, most likely caused by water or humidity. All technically low-grade examples and being offered as "AUTHENTIC" specimens only that are being sold "AS-IS", the cards also show varying degrees of wear to their corners and edges while the examples of Vezina, Dye, Boucher, Nighbor, S. Cleghorn, Coutu, Green and Spring also display with noteworthy creases.
Including the key cards of Georges Vezina, Auriel Joliat (rookie), Babe Dye (rookie), George Boucher (rookie), Cy Denenny (rookie) and Frank Nighbor (rookie) as well as Jack Darragh, Harry Broadbent, Sprague Cleghorn, Billy Coutu (rookie), Red Stuart (rookie), Vernon Forbes (rookie), Shorty Green (rookie), Red Green (rookie), Goldie Prodgers and Jesse Spring (rookie), also included with the lot is a copy of Bert McCaffrey's rookie card from the 1924-25 Champ's Cigarettes release that also falls into the lower grade range though is better than the V145-1's being offered along with it.
