This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
A fantastic duo of classic offerings to tell you about here, headlined by a pair of legendary New York Islander Hall of Famers, up on the auction block here are complete sets of 1977-78 and 1978-79 O-Pee-Chee hockey releases. Both consisting of 396 card checklists, the 1977-78 set, an overall consistent assembly of VG to VG-EX offerings on average, is headlined by card #105 of Bryan Trottier that falls in the vicinity of VG to VG-EX with corner wear preventing it from reaching a higher mark. For the rest of the set, the card of Guy Lafleur leads the way condition wise at VG-EX to EX with 75-25 centering while those of 134-Milbury RC (small mark on back), 211-Palmateer (corner wear/dings) and 249-Checklist (unmarked - corners dinged) are all seen around the neighbourhood of VG to VG-EX. For the rest of the set, 100-Dryden presents around FR to G due to creases while 251-Orr is close to GOOD but is impacted by a crease as well. With most of the cards sporting an elastic band mark, some are lower grade examples due to creases and most have dinged or worn corners that are worth mentioning for accuracy as well while the other two checklist cards, #68 and #381, are found in the scope of PR (badly marked and creased) and EX to EX-MT (unmarked - 75-25 centering) respectively.
For the 1978-79 release, found to be in a fairly consistent grade state of VG to VG-EX and VG-EX to EX, some of the cards are impacted by elastic band marks and corner wear. Headlined by an EX-MT to NM copy of Mike Bossy's rookie car that has just the slightest touch of corner wear at the top right point, other notable rookies include those of 143-Federko (EX to EX-MT - slight corner wear), 168-Wilson (EX-MT to NM - slightest touches of wear to the corners) and 353-Taylor (VG-EX to EX - dinged top right corner). Additionally, card #1, the highlights card of Bossy is found in PR condition. For the start cards, Guy Lafleur is the condition leader at EX-MT to NM while teammate Ken Dryden and Bobby Orr are close behind, falling towards EX to EX-MT with the Dryden having centering issues and the Orr two (2) dinged corners respectively. Finally, for the checklist cards, #24 is around EX to EX-MT with a small top right corner ding, #259 is around PR because of marks and creases and #297 is around EX-MT to NM while also being unmarked.
Of note, In the 1977-78 set, cards #8, 19, 20, 26, 137, 143, 184, 193, 194, 234 and 245 are Topps and not O-Pee-Chee and team checklists #72, 73, 74, 76, 77, 80, 81, 84, 85 and 88 are marked while also included is a complete 22-card set of the 1977-78 OPC glossy inserts.
