Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
A 17-year-old Wayne Gretzky made his professional debut during the 1978-79 season with the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association. Eight matches into the schedule, he would be traded to the Edmonton Oilers and the game would be forever changed. Offered here is the Great Granddaddy of Wayne Gretzky publications. Extremely rare and highly sought-after by those who collect anything featuring Wayne, this game day pub is the first pro program to feature Gretzky on the cover! The October 10, 1978 program was produced to be sold at the exhibition game pitting the Racers against the Winnipeg Jets on home ice at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. Although a few of the center pages are detached, the program appears complete, with just handling wear to the covers along with a fold/crease. There is also some water staining along the right-side edge of the front cover. Despite the condition issues, the publication displays nicely overall.
