Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024

Registering arguably the best season ever witnessed in the history of the NHL, Wayne Gretzky would conclude 1985-86 with an unfathomable 215 points in 80 games, adding an additional 19 points over just 10 playoff games and follow it up with a 1986-87 campaign that would see "The Great One" put up 183 points in 79 games as well as 34 points in 21 playoff games as the Oilers won their third Stanley Cup in four years. Offered here, we present this stick used by Gretzky circa 1986 during his days with the Edmonton Oilers. A familiar Titan made TPM 2020 model in white with red accents up and down both sides of the shaft, "W. Gretzky" is stamped over the shaft while Wayne's "99" is penned in heavily faded marker in above that. With the date stamp on the underside of the lower shaft smeared and no longer present, the stick retains its original tape job of blue cloth-over-white on the handle/knob and black on the blade, with the handle/knob tape helping us date the stick despite the lack of production stamp, as Gretzky only used this style in both the 1985-86 and 1986-87 campaigns. Displaying a "1-002" pattern stamp at the underside of the heel, the stick displays excellent game-use via numerous dark marks and abrasions throughout the entire length of the shaft and more dark marks over both sides of the heel and untaped area of the toe. Additionally, red post paint transfer marks are dotted throughout both sides of the lower shaft, the blade tape has marks over both sides as well. Originally used during one of the best periods of Wayne's incredible career, don't miss out on this one.
