A standout during his time with Dynamo Moscow in his native Russia, defenseman Alexander Karpovtsev was drafted by Quebec in 1990 but made his NHL debut for the New York Rangers in 1993-94, helping them end their 54-year Stanley Cup drought that same year. Playing a total of 596 National Hockey League contests over the course of a 12-year career in the league that included half of that time being in New York as a member of the Rangers, Karpovtsev would tragically pass away in the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl accident. Offered here, we present this Rangers jersey donned by Karpovtsev during pre-season play in the mid-1990s. A heavy mesh garment made by CCM, brand, size "52" and Gerry Cosby's tagging are all affixed to the inner collar of the blue coloured garment while the logos of both CCM and the NHL shield have been embroidered into the reverse hem. Decorated over the front with "Rangers" going diagonally down the chest from right-to-left in individually applied drop-shadow red-over-white letters, the sleeves and verso have been accented with Karpovtsev's number "25" in numerals of matching style while "Karpovtsev" is spelt out in matching heat pressed letters across an affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse, something the Rangers were known to do on pre-season jerseys of this era. Exhibiting light game-wear indicative of pre-season play, board burns are present near the ends of both sleeves as well as over the right shoulder. Of note, left over threads from a previously sewn on patch are found at the right shoulder on the interior of the jersey as well. Sporting a team repair over the right elbow and a small green coloured paint transfer at the top of the "5" on the reverse, a Rangers LOA will accompany the piece.
