Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
The NHL’s all-time winningest goaltender, Martin Brodeur entered the 2008-09 season needing needing 14 wins to break Roy's record (of 551 wins) and was on pace to get there in early December before a bicep tear on November 1st, requiring surgery, sidelined the legend for 50 games. Coming back on February 26th against the Colorado Avalanche, Brodeur would win eight of his first nine starts following his return to pass Roy. Also approaching the all-time shutouts mark set by Terry Sawchuk during his career, Marty would end the campaign only two (2) back of Sawchuk by the time the season came to a close. Offered here, and hailing from the 2008-09 season, is this stick used by Brodeur that has been photo-matched to the March 20th, 2009 contest against the Minnesota Wild in which he recorded the 101st blanking of his career. Made by Reebok, the 6K model stick in New Jersey's white, black and red colourway has had "Brodeur" stamped to the upper shaft. Retaining its original tape job of white over the knob and black wrapped around the blade, an annotation reading "Min" is penned in black ink over the front of the knob tape while another, also in black ink, reading "101st Career Shutout US Minnesota 3-20-09" is penned on the underside of the shaft near the top of the stick. Exhibiting good game-wear, puck marks are observed throughout the paddle, shaft and blade tape while red post paint transfer marks decorate the backside of the upper shaft as well. With additional wear present via numerous scuffs, marks and abrasions present throughout the sticks length, the monumental twig is photo-matched with Getty Image #85539261 and #85539299 (March 20th, 2009 vs Minnesota) to various puck marks over both the forehand and backhand sides of the paddle
