Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Perhaps the most famous hockey card set of all-time, cards from O-Pee-Chee’s 1979-80 release came in wax packs that contained 14 cards and cost young ones 20 cents, with the rookie cards of a young phenom by the name of Wayne Gretzky coveted by all by seasons end. Featuring beautiful colours, light corner wear, the rough cut edges that O-Pee-Chee releases of the era are known for and some corner wear all the way around, this copy of card #18 picturing Wayne Gretzky has been deemed worthy of ACA's VG-EX 4.5 mark after their inspection of the treasured cardboard. For the remaining 364 cards making up the rest of the offered near-complete assembly, missing #'s 22, 28, 42, 46, 55, 62, 66, 71, 74, 82, 85, 94, 101, 124, 146, 177, 231, 233, 242, 269, 274, 282, 283, 289, 327, 328, 343, 345, 358, 364 and 365 for completion, the group is found to be in an overall uniform condition range of VG-EX to EX throughout with most of the included cards affected by light corner wear that is worth mentioning for accuracy. For the notables, those of 131-Checklist (unmarked - off-center), 175-Howe (light corner wear) and 237-Checklist (unmarked - corner wear) lead the way condition wise, falling into the neighbourhood of VG-EX to EX for their efforts while 81-Jets Checklist (unmarked - corner wear), 150-Dryden (corner wear), 163-Whalers Checklist (unmarked - corner wear), 185-Hull (top right corner ding/damage), 200-Lafleur (light corner wear) and 346-Checklist (unmarked - completely off-center) follow closely behind in the proximity of VG to VG-EX shape. Also including G to VG copies of cardboard picturing Bobby Clarke (damage at bottom left corner) and Mike Bossy (corner wear plus dings), the team checklist cards found from #244 to #261 are all unmarked expect for #249 of the Detroit Red Wings which has had one box on the reverse erased.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by ACA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
