Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
A classic quartet of near-complete and complete card sets featuring the men who helped write the seven-season history of the World Hockey Association is up for grabs here, featuring assemblies of the 1974-75, 1975-76, 1976-77 and 1977-78 O-Pee-Chee WHA releases as well as some extra goodies. Led chronologically by pair of complete 1974-75 sets that feature a total of 66-cards each, both sets are led numerically by “The Howes” card while other noteworthy offerings include those of 17-Hedberg, 30-Cheevers, 40-Mahovlich, 50-Hull and 64-Plante, the cards in these sets are generally in the vicinity of EX and EX-MT with some better and some lower examples included as well. Additionally, a near-complete set of the same release is also included, missing only card #65, the Gilles Gratton RC, for completion. Six (6) empty wax wrappers that once housed cards from the set (and a stick of bubble gum!) are also included. For the 1975-76 release, this time beefed up to a 132-card checklist, 105 of the 132 cards making up a complete set are present and accounted for while the grouping is found to be generally in the condition range of VG, VG-EX and EX with about 20 cards having creases and many cards having O-Pee-Chee typical centering issues. Of the missing cards, the notables include 1-Hull, 7-M. Howe, 65-Hull AS, 66-G. Howe AS, 97-Keon, 100-G. Howe and 110-Mahovlich. A wax wrapper from the set is also included. For the 1976-77 release, once again sporting a checklist that features a total of 132-cards, the near-complete set offered as part of the lot here includes 107 of the cardboard specimens and is missing the key cards of 50-G. Howe, 65-Hull AS, 72-G. Howe AS, 95-M. Howe and 100-Hull. Also including twenty-seven (27) extra cards and two (2) wrappers, the cards in the set are generally in the condition range of EX and EX-MT with some better and some lower examples included and many cards having O-Pee-Chee typical centering issues. Additionally, card #111, the checklist, is marked and creased and another half dozen cards have creases as well that are worth mentioning for accuracy. Finally, for the 1977-78 set, reduced once again to a total of 66-cards, the assembly is missing numbers 35, 36, 42, 46 and 54 for completion and the cards are generally in the vicinity of EX and EX-MT conditions with some better and some lower examples included throughout. A great group for anyone looking to add a bit of the WHA to their collections, the group is also accompanied by a 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee Hockey WHA Posters empty wax box that shows a bit of wear and tear, and a 1974 Canada-Russia Series book that displays with expected age and handling wear.
