Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
One of only seven men throughout a century of NHL hockey to eclipse the insurmountable 700-goal plateau, Alexander Ovechkin has proven himself as one of the game’s all-time greatest, with HOF enshrinement guaranteed. Staring down the barrel towards the NHL's all-time goal scoring record currently held by Wayne Gretzky, offered here is this photo-matched helmet donned by Ovechkin during the 2020-21 season when he potted a total of 24 goals and 42 points in 45 games played. A CCM model in solid white with Capital One sponsorship decals gracing each side, “8” decals have also been added to the front crown and reverse while an NHL "Unity and Equality" sticker has been affixed to the lower right side. Also sporting a Capitals alternate logo sticker at the lower left, the padding and strapping harness are all intact and accounted for with the chin strap showing sweat staining while the snap is heavily rusted. Featuring a tinted visor over the front that tilts up and down, the helmet is cracked/broken on both sides where the visor is attached, with the areas showing signs of repair as well. With light to moderate wear exhibited on the head gear, including a number of scratches, marks and surface abrasions that are visible, the piece has been photo-matched with Getty Image #1305882397 (March 7th, 2021 vs Philadelphia) to the two black marks on the right side ear loop, the mark above the "T" in the Capital One sponsorship decal on the right side, the placement of the sponsorship and NHL Unity and Equality decals and finally the shape of the crack where the visor is affixed. Accompanied by a black wooden stand for the piece to be displayed on, a metal plaque reading "Alexander Ovechkin - Washington Capitals - Game Used Helmet - 2020-21 Season" is attached over the front of the base.
