Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024

Throughout hockey’s rich and lengthy history, scoring the most points has always been the measure of the greatest players. Only three players have dominated the league and claimed the all-time title for NHL points throughout the past six decades, with Rocket Richard first leading until he was overtaken by Gordie Howe in 1960. Mr. Hockey’s record was ultimately obliterated by Wayne Gretzky. This scarce ticket stub graded FR 1.5 by PSA hails from the historic match on Oct 15, 1989 that saw the Great One score his 1,851st point to surpass Howe, who was his childhood idol and on hand in Edmonton to witness Wayne break his record. Fittingly taking place against his former club, the Oilers, Gretzky first tied Howe early in the match scoring his 1,850th, then late in the game scored the tying goal for his 1,851st to surpass Howe, and in true Gretzky fashion, added the game-winning goal in overtime for a hat trick on the paramount evening. The ticket displays very nicely with strong colors and despite the crease from side to side across the upper portion and clear tape on the lower portion. It sports “Game 3” (the Oilers’ third home game of the season took place on Oct 15th vs the Kings) and serves as a fitting tribute to the night Wayne Gretzky became the greatest scorer in hockey history.
