Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
Throughout the rich and lengthy history of our nation’s sport, scoring the most points has always been the measure of the greatest players. Only three players have dominated the league and claimed the all-time title for NHL points throughout the past 60+ years, with Rocket Richard first leading until surpassed by Mr. Hockey in 1960, with the record completely obliterated by The Great One in 1989. This scarce ticket stub hails from the historic match on Oct 15, 1989 that witnessed Wayne Gretzky score his 1,851st point to surpass the immortal Gordie Howe, and it has been recently graded FR 1.5 by PSA. Fittingly taking place against his former club the Edmonton Oilers, Gretzky first tied Howe early in the match scoring his 1,850th, then late in the game scored the tying goal for his 1,851st to surpass Howe, and in true Gretzky fashion, added the game-winning goal in overtime for a hat trick on the paramount evening. The ticket sports “Game 3” (the Oilers’ third home game of the season took place on Oct 15th vs the Kings) and displays a few creases. Never to be surpassed, this ticket will forever serve as the consummate symbol of Wayne Gretzky’s unchallenged supremacy.
