Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Hailing from an era that included stars such as Mario Lemieux and Patrick Roy along with Wayne Gretzky, who was experiencing his final seasons in Edmonton and first season in Los Angeles, offered here is this lot consisting of complete sets of Topps' 1986-87, 1987-88 and 1988-89 hockey releases. Starting with the oldest of the three releases, the 1986-87 release features a checklist of 198-cards and is found to be in an overall consistent condition range of EX-MT to NM for its effort with some of the included cardboard showing small amounts of corner wear as well that is worth noting for accuracy. Paced by an EX-MT to NM example of Patrick Roy's key rookie card (very small print mark at the top border), the other notable rookies of 9-Vanbiesbrouck and 149-Clarke are seen as being in the same EX-MT to NM scope along with 3-Gretzky while 11-Yzerman (top left corner ding) and 122-Lemieux (top right corner damage) are in the ranges of VG to VG-EX and G to VG respectively. Including two (2) complete sets of the company's 1987-88 release, once again with 198-cards in the checklist, both are in the overall high-grade condition range of EX-MT to NM with the first set featuring keys of 2-Tocchet RC, 15-Lemieux, 42-Robitaille RC, 53-Gretzky, 123-Oates and 163-Roy all in the notable EX-MT to NM range while the other set features EX-MT to NM cards of 2-Tochhet RC, 15-Lemieux, 53-Gretzky, 123-Oates RC (very slight print marks along top border) and 163-Roy while card #42 of Robitaille is closer to EX-MT because of slight factory print marks along the top border. Finally, for the 1988-89 release, also comprised of 198-cards and found in the overall uniform condition range of EX-MT to NM, the set includes the first cardboard appearances of 66-Hull (VG-EX to EX - front gum residue and small print bubble to the left side of his head), 194-Turgeon (EX-MT to NM), 122-Shanahan (EX-MT to NM) and 16-Nieuwendyk (EX-MT to NM) while the other key cards consist of 1-Lemieux (EX-MT to NM), and 120-Gretzky (EX-MT to NM - 1st Kings card). With all the checklist cards for all four (4) sets remaining in an unmarked state and with the rest of the stars in a condition consistent with all the sets they are found in, also included with the lot is a complete grouping of the 1985-86 Topps sticker set that features 32 total stickers.
