Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

One of only seven men throughout a century of NHL hockey to eclipse the insurmountable 700-goal plateau, Alexander Ovechkin has proven himself as one of the game’s all-time greatest, with HOF enshrinement guaranteed. Staring down the barrel towards the NHL's all-time goal scoring record currently held by Wayne Gretzky, offered here is this pair of items either worn by or issued to the 1st overall pick at the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals including a pair of game/practice-worn skates and a pair of game-issued gloves.
Starting with the skates, dating from the time period of 2008 to 2011 based on the model that they are, the boots were obtained by the original owner during a fan auction/raffle during a Capitals game at the Verizon Center in the era they come from. Originally housed in a display case with a plaque that read "Alexander Ovechkin Game Used Skates", our consignor did not receive the case or the plaque from the original owner when they purchased the skates from them. Custom CCM made U+ Crazy Light boots with Tuuk Lightspeed II blade holders and bright yellow laces, Ovechkin specific customizations found on each skate include his personal logo over each tongue and “Misha” plus “Sergey”, Ovi's brothers, along the top side of each boot. Void of their steel in the blade holders, the underside of each boot has had a label affixed to them reading "Ovechkin Alex" along with other things including the size/width of "9 3/4...EE/B". Still sporting their original insoles on the interior of each skate, handwritten notations in black and blue marker ink are found on the inside of the right boot, presumably penned by Alex himself to show equipment staff where the skate was bothering him fitment wise and where CCM had to make adjustments (it is known that late in the 2010-11 season that Ovi was still having difficulty with support in this model and actually started wrapping the boot in tape before switching to Bauer for the following season). Displaying light wear overall, scuffs, marks, scratches and abrasions are seen over both boots with additional wear of the same style present over both toe caps as well.
For the gloves, hailing from a season in which he scored both his milestone 600th career point and 300th goal, the game-issued CCM made gauntlets are found done up in Washington's red, white and blue colourway and have had "CCM" screened over the cuffs of each mitt in blue. Having had "GR8" embroidered into the wrist of both gloves, with this repeated in Cyrillic as well, the initials "C.O." appear over each glove for his late brother while additional graphics over each wrist pad with his grandfather’s first and last names (one on each glove) are also present. Displaying with no signs of game-use, having only been issued but never apparently worn, it is worth mentioning that a bit of rubbing is seen on each palm it seems, which is heaviest on the left one, while Capitals holograms are affixed to the wrist of both gloves and are accompanied by a matching Capitals COA.
