Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024

Arguably the most fabled and legendary player in both the complete history of the Montreal Canadiens and the earlier days of the sport, Howie Morenz was a true contemporary superstar, filling endless venues while dominating the sport. Worthy of a Shakespearean tragedy, the Stratford Streak would have his career cut short in 1937 due to a broken leg, passing away from the injury a short time later. This original circa-1930s Type III photo of the icon has been signed and encapsulated as "Authentic" by PSA/DNA, with the autograph graded "8". The same image used for Morenz's 1933-34 V129 Anonymous and Canadian Gum V252 hockey cards, it measures just over 5" x 7 1/2", with Morenz placing an absolutely stunning dark ink signature that appears to be fountain pen over the bottom right. The indentation to the photo paper from the signature can be seen when held at an angle, and it is hard to imagine a darker signature for the period. The photo itself is in excellent condition with no visible issues whatsoever, with a pencil notation on the reverse along with "Morenz" handwritten. When combining the factors of the condition of both the photo and signature along with the historic importance of the image itself used for two paramount period hockey issues, this is without doubt one of the absolute best signed Morenz items in the entire hobby. A PSA/DNA LOA will accompany.
