Marking the first season on play for the newly minted American Football League, formed to be a direct challenger to the National Football League, the 1960 AFL season saw the Houston Oilers claim the league's inaugural championship game 24-16 over the Los Angeles Chargers. Offered here, we present this stater set of Fleer's 1960 AFL Football release that includes sixty-three (63) of the 132 cards making up the checklist. The first of a four (4) year run featuring AFL players on Fleer cards, the group present in an overall condition range of EX up to EX-MT to NM throughout, all the cards present with a humidity curve to them that is worth noting for accuracy. For the key cards, included are those of 7-Gillman RC (EX to EX-MT - slight ding at the top right corner), 17-Dubenion (EX-MT to NM), 20-Baugh (EX-MT to NM), 66-Cannon (VG-EX to EX - miscut and small print mark), 76-Lowe (EX-MT to NM), 116-Stram RC (EX-MT to NM), 128-Maguire (EX to EX-MT - 95-5 off-center top-to-bottom) and 132-Beagle (EX-MT - slight miscut at the top border). Additionally, also included with the starter set is a group of 120 extra cards. With in some cases between 10 and 20 extra cards of players included in the group of extras, these extras almost look like if they are for a printing test run with different colors/focus. In the group of extras, cards with multiples examples include; 16-Dimitroff (15), 28-Amstutz (15), 40-Padgett (15), 52-Mayfield (15), 76-Lowe rookie (15), 88-Work (15), 100-Branch (15) and 112-Bredice (15). All in all, a colorful and historic release for football historians and collectors of vintage cards to consider, this batch will entertain and provide enjoyment when it arrives.
