Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
On top of the hockey world in the late-1940s with a trio of consecutive Stanley Cup victories from 1947 to 1949, the Leafs would again raise Lord Stanley’s hardware in 1951, with that particular championship remembered for the historic overtime winner by Bill Barilko. Offered here, we present this wool cardigan dating from that bountiful time in Maple Leafs history that was worn by someone associated with the club, either a player or staff member. Made by Monarch, the company's "Macaber by Monarch" label graces the inner collar of the all-wool made shawl style garment while the left breast has been decorated with a thick felt Toronto Maple Leafs logo patch has sports embroidered details and has had the team name applied in individually sewn on white felt letters. Measuring out to a size 42 and remaining in excellent condition for its age but in need of a good cleaning as the white wool now presents with a cream/yellow hue, Toronto's blue colour appears in the placket, around the collar, at the cuffs and at the top of the pockets. Remaining hole free with no fraying or damage to the ends of the cuffs, all the buttons are present and accounted. Sporting some spot stains throughout the piece that all-in-all don't take away from its beauty and appeal whatsoever with heavier toning to the inside of the collar, a photo of Ted Kennedy, then captain of the Maple Leafs, that is dated to 1951, shows him holding a cardigan in the same style as the one being offered.
