Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Widely regarded as the best hockey player to ever live, Gordie Howe played an incredible 32 years of professional hockey in both the NHL and WHA, winning multiple championships in each league. A 21x All-Star, 6x Art Ross Trophy winner and 6x Hart Memorial Trophy winner as well as a Hockey Hall of Fame inductee in 1972 who was affectionately known by all as simply "Mr. Hockey", offered here is this copy of Howe's key third year card from Parkhurst's 1953-54 release. The first Parkhurst set to feature dimensions similar to the standard that is seen throughout the industry today as well as much better imagery over the fronts, Howe's desirable cardboard was featured as card #50 in the 100 card assembly, with the Red Wings start pictured competing against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Found in raw ungraded form and showing a printed signature of Gordie's over top of his picture on the front of the card, the write up on the reverse makes mention of Howe's powerful skating and stickhandling ability and talks about how he was the NHL's leading scorer for the past three (3) seasons at that time, setting a new points record in 1952-53 with 95. Remaining in the condition range of G to VG with corner wear and some damage to the top border being observed on the toned offering, good colours are retained on the front side while the reverse is also clean though does sport a crease near the top right corner.
