Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Always a hobby favourite and featuring a groovy array of colours as well as a strong group of National Hockey League star power, up on the block this time is a complete assembly of O-Pee-Chee’s fabled 1971-72 release that features a checklist of 264 cards. A mixed condition set that is found to be in the overall uniform condition ranges of G to VG, VG to VG-EX and VG-EX, many of the cards display with corner wear and some of the cards also show with a crease that is more prominent on the reverse. Highlighted by the key rookie cards of Montreal Canadiens teammates Ken Dryden and Guy Lafleur, the Dryden is found to be in the neighbourhood of GOOD due to a crease at the top right and corner wear while the Lafleur is in the scope of VG to VG-EX with a light crease at the bottom right on the reverse. Additionally, the assembly's other notable first-year example of Marcel Dionne is viewed as being around the condition range of VG to VG-EX as well for its effort while being off-center and having a wrinkle at the bottom left of its reverse. For the rest of the key cards in the set, card #264, the checklist, is in the proximity of VG-EX to EX with no markings and light corner wear while VG to VG-EX examples are present for 111-Checklist (unmarked - light corner wear), 195-Plante (light corner wear), 251-Orr AS (small crease that shows on the reverse) and 262-Howe (corner wear). Also including GOOD vicinity cards of 20-P. Esposito (two small creases), 50-Hull (two small creases), 60-Perreault (surface wear and rounded corners), 100-Orr (crease), 114-Clarke (crease and corner wear), 193-Sittler (front stain and light crease on reverse), 245-Orr Trophies (creased) and 263-Beliveau (crease showing on reverse and rounded corners), also included with the set is a complete set of the hockey booklets that sees all of the 24 examples present and accounted for in a mix of French and English versions with booklet #1 of Bobby Hull having a staple holding it together and #13 of Tony Esposito marked on back.
