Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
The American counterpart to O-Pee-Chee' release and the most famous hockey card set of all-time, cards from Topps’s 1979-80 release came in wax packs that contained 10 cards, 1 sticker and 1 piece of bubble gum that cost young ones 20 cents. With the rookie cards of a young phenom by the name of Wayne Gretzky coveted by all by seasons end, offered here, we present this lot consisting of two (2) opened 1979-80 Topps Hockey 500-count vending boxes that includes a copy of Gretzky's sought after rookie card. With both boxes showing wear and stamped hockey in black ink over top of each lid, both display Topps branding and imagery with the cards inside appearing to have never been touched until now despite having been previously opened. Of note, it is worth mentioning for accuracy that the cards inside both boxes do display with a small hit mark to one of their corners. With the key card of Gretzky found to be in the condition range of G to VG because of surface damage at the right border and a small crease at the bottom left, the rest of the key cardboard is all found in the scope of EX-MT to NM condition including 50-Robinson (x3), 155-Mikita, 83-Canadiens Stanley Cup (x2 - off-center from top-to-bottom), 131-Checklist (unmarked), 150-Dryden (x3), 175-Howe (x3), 185-Hull (x5), 200-Lafleur (x4 - all are off-center), 230-Bossy (x3 - all off-center), 237-Checklist (x5 - unmarked with 2 showing with 90-10 centering). A satisfying offering that should please our lucky winning bidder upon its arrival.
