Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024

A five-time Stanley Cup winner throughout his lengthy career which included winning four championships in just six seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, Esa Tikkanen would play a total of 877 games over the course of his National Hockey League career and also suit up for his native Finland on numerous occasions as well, winning a bronze medal at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games. Taking his talents from Western Canada to the bright lights of Manhattan and the New York Rangers, Tikkanen would register a total of 54 points in 83 games played during the regular season and 8 more during 23 playoff games as he would help the Rangers to their first Cup championship in 54 years and add fifth (5th) to his own trophy case. Offered here, we present this New York Rangers jersey worn by Tikkanen during New York's championship season of 1993-94. A heavyweight mesh construction garment made by CCM, Gerry Cosby and CCM labeling is affixed to the collar, along with a size “52” fly tag. Featuring embroidered CCM and NHL crests over the reverse hem, the front has been decorated with “Rangers” going diagonally down the chest in individually sewn on red-over-white drop-shadow tackle twill letters. Sporting the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals patch atop of the left shoulder, we were unable to photo-match the jersey from photos/videos of game 3, 4 and 6 so the jersey was most likely patched-up as a back-up for the series. Featuring Tikkanen's usually seen customizations such as elastic cuffs and the fight strap cut from the interior, the jersey has been styled over the sleeves and verso with Tikkanen's number "10" in dual layer drop-shadow tackle twill numerals while "Tikkanen" is spelt out in matching style letters that have been placed in a gentle arch at the top of the reverse which have been sewn directly to the material. Of note, it must be mentioned that there is no Cosby stamp on the interior of the jersey above the fight strap but according to information received, when MeiGray acquired the sets of 1993-94 jerseys in June of 1997 they were not complete so it is possible that a jersey lacks the Cosby stamp. Exhibiting light-to-moderate game-wear that is easily visible, stick marks are present over the lower front and left sleeve while board burns are found over both sleeves as well. Additionally, a pair of team repairs are seen over the upper portion of the right sleeve and there is a couple of light spot stains on the inside of the left sleeve and in the "1" on the reverse. Hailing from Tikkanen's personal collection, the jersey will be accompanied by his signed LOA.
