Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023

Featuring a 51-card checklist that includes players from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens, the 1961-62 Parkhurst set is often regarded by collectors as the release that signaled the beginning of the end for the company’s hockey releases. Found here in a complete assembly, the group is led by quintet of cards that have been graded by Canadian company KSA that includes that likes of HOFers Tim Horton (KSA NM 7), Dave Keon (RC - KSA NMM 7.5), Red Kelly (KSA NMM 8), Gordie Howe (KSA MINT 8.5) and Jean Beliveau (KSA NMM 8). All housed in older KSA holders that remain in good condition despite some expected light scratches/scuffs from handling, age and storage, we must point out that these cards are over-graded in our opinion.
The rest of the set is found to be in an overall grade range of EX to EX-MT after inspection with the exceptions being cards 14-Hillman and 29-M. Pronovost due to stains over their reverses. For the notables, card #26 of Norm Ullman leads the way condition wise at EX-MT to NM and is followed up by EX to EX-MT copies of 17-Stanley (light corner wear), 17-Armstrong (very light corner wear) and 51-A. Pronovost (light corner wear). Continuing, VG-EX to EX cards are present for 7-Shack (small stain on reverse, front is EX), 8-Pulford, 25-Delvecchio (tiny hairline crease at bottom border on the right side), 31-Sawchuk (small amount of paper loss on reverse at bottom right corner), 35-Geoffrion (bottom border dent and corner wear), 36-Moore (stain on back, front is EX), 43-Richard (bottom left corner wear/ding) and 49-Plante (corner wear). With the keys rounded out by a VG to VG-EX range copy of card #3 picturing Johnny Bower over the front (stain on reverse, front is EX) and a G to VG example of Frank Mahovlich's cardboard (stain on reverse, hairline crease at the bottom), don't miss out on this wonderful Original Six era assembly!
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of these pieces through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
