Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Fiercely defending the front of his net with slashes delivered to those encroaching upon his space, goaltender Paddy Moran spent the first two decades of the 20th century guarding the crease of the legendary Quebec Bulldogs. The two-time Stanley Cup champion also tended the net of Art Ross’ short-lived All-Montreal Hockey Club, in 1909-10. Guarding the creases of the fabled Portage Lakes and Montreal Wanderers squads during the early-1900s, netminder Riley Hern was crowned a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Wanderers. The most desirable of all hockey card and postcard issues, we have 1910-11 Sweet Caporal postcards of Moran (graded Good 2 by PSA) and Hern (trimmed to just the image). The Moran sports some paper loss on the front and toning/dirt staining to the reverse, with scratches to the PSA holder, while the Hern has been trimmed completely down, with just the outline of his image remaining, with writing and glue/paper residue on the reverse. Sweet Caporal postcards are literally impossible to find.
