Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/20/2023
Playing in the recently formed Pacific Coast Hockey Association founded by the Patrick brothers in 1911, the Victoria Aristocrats led by Lester was actually nicknamed the "Senators" upon formation, opting for the "Aristocrats" moniker in 1913. Victoria would famously compete for the Stanley Cup in 1914 as champions of the PCHA, losing a hard fought battle to the NHA-champion Toronto Blueshirts. The club would go on to win Lord Stanley's coveted trophy as the Victoria Cougars in 1925. This photo - just recently found at an antique store in Victoria, features the 1913-14 Stanley Cup finalist Aristocrats. At approx 6" x 8", the photo features full body composite images of each of the nine rostered players including Lester Patrick, along with the team name and "Champions 1913-14". Trimmed, missing about 1" inch give or take along the bottom border, all that is missing are the names of the bottom row of players along with the bottom border. The photo exhibits light surface wear, with silvering to the images and paper loss on the verso from probable scrapbook removal. This is the first example of this photo featuring the historic Aristocrats that we have ever handled.
