Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Increasing from the previous season's set size from 40 to 60 cards, the 1924-25 William Paterson V145-2 set featured cards of the two newest clubs, the Boston Bruins and Montreal Maroons. The William Paterson firm’s second hockey card effort, released when the Montreal Canadiens were the reigning Stanley Cup champions and surfacing less often than their counterparts from the previous campaign. Offered here is this near-complete set of the 1924-25 William Paterson V145-2 release that includes 56 of the 60 cards found in the checklist. Featuring key cards picturing the likes of legends such as Georges Vezina, Howie Morenz, King Clancy, Harry Broadbent, Auriel Joliat and the rookie card of Alex Connell among others, all the cards were stuck together and separated at some point in a way that caused paper loss and paper residue on the front and backs of the included cards, it is also worth noting that there is noticeable staining throughout the group in the areas that show the previously mentioned paper loss and paper residues, most likely caused by water or humidity. All technically low-grade examples and being offered as "AUTHENTIC" specimens only that are being sold "AS-IS". Missing only the cards of 14-Green, 15-Green, 42-Carroll and 53-Adams for completion, sure to be pleasing to collectors despite their condition is the fact that the group comes with a total of nineteen (19) extras that features examples of 1-Ironstone, 9-Finnigan, 10-Connell (2), 16-McKinnon, 18-Roach, 20-Spring, 22-Harris, 23-Headley, 33-Munro, 35-Cain, 38-Scott, 40-Dinsmore, 41-Berlinquette, 43-Vezina, 54-Dye, 55-Reid, 58-Corbeau and 60-Jackson.
For the key group of the first six (6) cards that includes Vezina, Morenz, Clancy, Broadbent, Joliat and Connell, the Vezina card has paper loss and paper residues on the front and back of the card but no visible creases while all corners are rounded and exhibit wear. The Morenz card is one of the nicest looking cards in the lot and has paper loss/paper residue located mostly in the left front corner area while a number of fine creases are located in the jersey area at the middle of the image. Additionally, the card has a small tear in the middle of the right edge, a lead pencil marking at the top right front on the front, has small areas of paper loss/paper loss on the back and all corners are rounded and exhibit wear. For the Clancy card, it seems to just have paper residues on its front (no paper loss) but it is hard to be 100% sure. The back of the card has paper loss and paper residues plus the corners are slightly rounded and exhibit some wear. The card has no visible creases that we could spot. For the Broadbent card, paper loss and paper residues are observed on the front and back of the card along with a long horizontal crease at the bottom on the front. Additionally, the corners are slightly rounded and exhibit some wear. For the Joliat card, paper loss and paper residues are found on the front of the card, which also has numerous creases and general surface wear as well. The back of the card has paper loss and all corners are rounded and exhibit wear as well. Finally, the Connell RC has paper loss and paper residues over the front and the back of the card and there is a small tear in the outer layer of the card on the back as well. Sporting no visible creases, the corners are slightly rounded and exhibit some wear that is worthy of mention.
With most of the remaining cards showing similar condition problems as to what are seen amongst the six (6) that are profiled above, also noteworthy is the fact that cards of Vezina (2nd example included), Campbell, Finnigan, Randall, Langlois, Stuart (torn), Rothchild, Boucher, Reid (torn), Holway, McCaffery, Corbeau and Jackson are all missing pieces.
