Perhaps the greatest player the game of hockey and the National Hockey League has ever seen, Mario Lemieux needs no introduction and during the 1980s and 1990s was the only one capable of holding a candle with the likes of Wayne Gretzky and his greatness. Leading the league in points for the 1996-97 campaign with a total of 122 points in 76 games played, including 50 goals, Lemieux announced on April 6th, 1997 that he planned to retire following that years playoffs. A two-time Stanley Cup champion as a player, offered here is this Penguins jersey worn by Lemieux on April 19th, 1997 (Game 2 - Eastern Conference Quarter Finals) against the Philadelphia Flyers when Mario scored at 10:59 of the 1st period. A heavy weight mesh construction garment made by Starter, Center Ice Authentic Collection labeling along with a Starter brand tag are affixed to the inner collar above a size patch reading "58-R" that has had "66c" penned to it in black marker ink while a small red square sticker has been affixed as well. Additionally, a number "4" in black marker ink is seen penned over the Starter label. Having had both the Starter and NHL shield logos embroidered into the reverse hem, the front of the jersey is decorated diagonally down the front with "Pittsburgh" in individually applied drop-shadow tackle twill letters, the distinguished captain's "C" appears over the left breast while matching alternate logo crests have been added over both shoulders. Accented over the sleeves and verso with Lemieux's number "66" dual layer yellow-over-white tackle twill numerals, "Lemieux" is spelt out in matching style letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the back. Sporting a shortened hem that has resulted in both the Starter and NHL shield logos having been folded underneath, an additional patch reading "66 Lemieux '96-97" has been added inside the reverse hem as well. Exhibiting no obvious signs of game-wear, the jersey presents in beautiful condition. Worn by the legend at the time he scored his first of three goals in that years playoffs, a notation reading "4/19/97 VS Flyers 1st Round Goal #1" is penned over the white waist stripe inside the reverse in black marker which has bled through to the outside. A special specimen, a PenguinsChronicles.com LOA from Casey Samuelson will accompany the piece.
