Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
77 cards larger than the set from the previous season, the 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee release rang in at 341 total cards, the biggest set released by the Canadian manufacturer up to that point and came at an important time in hockey history as the WHA entered the professional climate with its first season of play that same year. On the auction block here is this complete set of 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee with the grouping here largely remaining in the EX to EX-MT vicinity and largely affected by slight corner wear that holds the cards back from achieving a higher grade. Led condition wise by a copy of card #341 picturing Gerry Pinder that falls into the range of EX-MT, Gerry's cardboard is joined by card #283, the assist leaders card of Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito that is in the same condition range and has slight corner fuzz. Including EX to EX-MT range cards of 6-Checklist (unmarked - slight wear at bottom left), 111-P. Esposito, 145-Dryden, 247-Dryden In Action (off-center on the reverse) and 336-Hull (off-center), those seen as being in the vicinity of EX include the cards of 8-Dionne (corner wear) and 14-Clarke (corner wear). For the rest of the notables, specimens falling in the range of VG-EX to EX include 58-Orr In Action (factory print line and corner wear), 59-Lafleur (light damage top left), 190-Checklist (unmarked - top right corner wear/ding), 227-Orr/Park All-Star (top left corner wear/ding) and 340-Cheevers (top left corner wear/ding) while VG to VG-EX neighbourhood cards include 129-Orr (corner wear) and 228-Hull All-Star (stain on reverse). Rounded out by GOOD range cards of 19-Checklist (unmarked - creases) and 334-Checklist (unmarked - crease), the assembly is overall a pleasing set sure to bring back fond memories of yesteryear for our lucky winner bidder.
