Playing his junior hockey as a member of the Regina Pats and helping them to an appearance at the 1980 Memorial Cup, Jock Callander would never be drafted by an NHL club, instead choosing to start in the CHL and IHL, where he spent the first five pro years of his career. Eventually signing a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins and appearing in 101 NHL games with the Penguins over the course of three (3) seasons, plus twenty-two (22) playoff games. A Stanley Cup champion in 1992 who would also win a pair of Turner Cups in 1986 and 1989 plus eventually a Calder Cup in 2016 as assistant coach of the Lake Erie Monsters, offered here is this Pittsburgh Penguins jersey worn by Callander during the 1988-89 season. Made by CCM, a washed out Maska label is affixed to the inner collar while the jersey itself measures out to roughly a size "50". Having had the CCM logo embroidered into the reverse hem as well as "Century Sports", then the Penguins customizer, the front of the Ultrafil material garment is decorated with a Penguins "gold toe" team crest that features embroidered details throughout. Accented over the sleeves and verso with Callander's number "14" in dual layer black-over-yellow tackle twill numerals, "Callander" is spelt out in single layer black twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate that runs shoulder-to-shoulder at the top of the back. Of note, the jersey can be distinguished as a second set offering based on the fact that jerseys from the first set of the 1988-89 season didnt use an embroidered team crest of twill names and numbers. Exhibiting good game-wear, team repairs grace the lower front and both sleeves while stick marks are dotted throughout the body and both sleeves as well. Also displaying board burns on both sleeves and some small spot stains throughout the piece, evidence of numerous washings is found via fading of the threads used to sew down the letters of the name to the nameplate and heavy salting/rusting in the snaps of the fight strap. Finally, heavy pilling is present on the interior as well.
