Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
New York's Berk Ross Company paid tribute to 72 top athletes with two-card panels back in 1951 with the lot featured here consisting of three (3) of the four (4) hockey players that were included in the set. Montreal Canadiens' goaltending great Bill Durnan's first appearance on a small trading card highlights, with Bill Quackenbush appearing alongside Durnan who is also featured on an additional copy of his card that has been detached from his hockey playing counterpart. Additionally, a card featuring Sid Abel of the Detroit Red Wings is included, once attached to a card of Oklahoma tackle Wade Walker but now alone in a solo effort. In terms of condition, the panel featuring the cards of Durnan and Quackenbush is seen as being in the condition range of EX-MT to NM after inspection though appearing miscut along one edge while the solo cards of Durnan and Abel both fall into the condition vicinity of EX to EX+ in our opinions. Of note, while his "rookie card" is widely regarded as his 1955-56 Parkhurst "Old Time Great" offering, this card of Durnan is one of the few cards or photos to be released during his actual career. Additionally, also included is a flattened cardboard box/wrapper that once held cards from "Series 3" as is displayed on the front along with the original price of .10 cents. Remaining in good condition with no major obtrusive flaws other than a couple of small tears near both of the ends on the front, fold lines and creases are observed throughout that are worth making note of for accuracy. Additionally, also included with the lot is a 1960-61 Topps album. In overall good condition with normal handling wear observed, all the pages remain present on the interior with folding present on some of the corners while toning is seen inside the covers which also display creases from folding. Having had an address label affixed to the front cover near the top an additional label with handwritten notations reading "1960 217-432" is found added near the bottom of the front cover as well.
