Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Perhaps the most famous hockey card set of all-time, cards from O-Pee-Chee’s 1979-80 release came in wax packs that contained 14 cards and cost young ones 20 cents, with the rookie cards of a young phenom by the name of Wayne Gretzky coveted by all by seasons end. Featuring beautiful colours and overall pleasing centering with some wear observed to the corners and edges all the way around, some of which is just the commonly seen issues that plague O-Pee-Chee sets of the era, this copy of card #18 picturing Wayne Gretzky, that has just recently earned an EX 5 designation from PSA, leads the way for this 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee complete set of 396 cards. For the other 395 cards making up the rest of the assembly, are seen as being in an overall uniform condition range of EX-MT to NM. For the notables, the cardboard of 125-Clarke, 160-Dionne, 175-Howe, 185-Hull (slightly off-center top-to-bottom) 200-Lafleur and 230-Bossy are seen as being in that EX-MT to NM territory while the cards of 40-Salming and of then recently retired goaltender Ken Dryden (#150) fall into the neighbourhood of EX-MT due to printing defects. For the checklist cards, all three are unmarked with two in EX-MT to NM condition range while the other is around EX-MT due to a gum stain. Additionally, the three (3) new team logo cards and team checklist cards are also all unmarked and along with the other star cards, are all in a condition consistent with the rest of the set. A satisfying offering that should please our lucky winning bidder upon its arrival.
