Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Featuring a checklist that included a total of 396 cards, the 1984-85 O-Pee-Chee hockey release is paced by the key rookie card of HOFer Steve Yzerman but also features the first-year cardboard of players such as Dave Andreychuk, Tom Barrasso, Chris Chelios, Doug Gilmour, Pat LaFontaine, Cam Neely, Dave Poulin and Pat Verbeek in its checklist as well, making it one of the most popular and collected sets of the 1980s era of hockey releases. Offered here, we present this unopened wax pack of the 1984-85 O-Pee-Chee hockey release. Having been certified as "Authentic - Unopened" by Global Authentication Inc., who have awarded the pack a mark of NM+ 7.5, the alluring offering appears to show the card of New Jersey Devils left winger and captain Don Lever through the wrapper on the reverse. Displaying a cost of .35 cents on the front, a .10 cent increase from the year prior, the pack also contained more cards than those released the year before, with fifteen (15) total contained on the inside of the wrapper along with a stick of bubble gum. Unopened pack aficionados will want to seriously consider this wondrous opportunity, with the GAI holder housing the tempting showing some scratches and scuffs over both sides worth mentioning.
Additionally, also included with the lot are a trio of cards showcasing the images of three of the greatest players of all-time via Gordie Howe (1971-72 "Mr. Hockey" collectors card), Mario Lemieux (1986-87 O-Pee-Chee) and of course, Wayne Gretzky (1989-90 O-Pee-Chee). All having been inspected and slabbed by KSA, the Howe has been assessed a grade of EX 5 while the Lemieux boasts an ENM 6 and the Gretzky a perfect GEM MINT 10. With all three holders remaining in excellent condition, each shows just the odd light scratch/scuff.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
