Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023

An interesting and thought provoking offering comes available here, once worn by one of the most formidable players to suit up for the Montreal Canadiens during the 1980s, via this photo-matched Habs jersey worn by Claude Lemieux in circa 1988 that was recycled for and subsequently worn by Mario Roberge during the 1990-91 pre-season and training camp. A CCM made offering that dates to either the 1987-88 or 1988-89 seasons based on the CCM logo that is embroidered into the shortened reverse hem as well as the neck tag positioning, a washed out and partially sewn over Maska Ultrafil label that is void of any distinguishable size designation remains affixed to the inner collar with the jersey measuring out to roughly a size 50. Decorated with the Canadiens famed "CH" crest over the front in layered tackle twill, the sleeves and verso of the jersey have had Lemieux's/Roberge's number "32" sewn to them in dual layer white-over-blue tackle twill numerals while a nameplate with "Roberge" spelt out across it in single layer white twill letters is affixed across the top of the reverse, covering up the evidence of the former Lemieux nameplate which can be seen when the jersey is turned inside out. Absolutely riddled with game-wear throughout its entirety, a total of 65+ team repairs done in the bullet style typical of Montreal jerseys of this period are observed throughout the front, reverse and both sleeves while other signs of wear including stick marks, board burns, coloured paint transfers and unrepaired cuts are seen in the same areas along with staining to the lower front and popped seams at the collar. With heavy pilling present on the interior and the stitching at the bottom of the "3" on the reverse having gave away over the years, it is worth mentioning that the fight strap on the interior is heavily salted and rusted inside the snaps and is also showing popped threads as well. Regarding the aforementioned photo-match, the jersey is matched with Getty Image #141770107, an undated image of Lemieux taken in a game against the Buffalo Sabres at the Montreal Forum, to the now mostly washed out black stick mark found over the reverse hem line. Accompanied by an LOA from Drop The Gloves, it should be noted that they state that the jersey was brought to the Canadiens by Roberge from old Sherbrooke Canadiens stock owned by the Fredericton Canadiens, Montreal's AHL team at the time, because he did not like the larger fit of the new jerseys.
