Fondly known by his nickname “Big Play”, Willie Clay and his interception against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1996 AFC Championship Game sent the New England Patriots to their second ever Super Bowl where they would meet up with the Green Bay Packers. Originally drafted in the 8th round of the 1992 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, Clay would play eight (8) years in the NFL including three (3) for New England from 1996 to 1998. Offered here, is this Patriots jersey worn by Clay during the 1998 season. Made by Starter, an NFL Pro Line/Starter brand jock tag is affixed to the front hem along with a size “48” fly tag underneath it. An all-blue mostly mesh construction garment, the NFL shield logo has been added to the bottom of the collar above a Patriots wordmark patch while the sleeves, front and reverse have all had Clay’s number “32” sewn on in dual layer white-over-red tackle twill numerals. Displaying signs of numerous washing with some very light red colour bleed over the white parts of the numbers, “Clay” is spelt out in single layer white twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate while the shoulders have been decorated with oversized Patriots logo patches above small Starter brand logos on each sleeve as well. Exhibiting good game wear, the jersey displays a total of twelve (12) team repairs throughout as well as some rubbing to the dazzle twill material and light marks over the front and reverse numbers. A classic piece from just before the start of the Patriots dynasty run, the piece is accompanied by a COA from noted football jersey dealer Jim Yackel.
