Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/20/2023
A stupendous labor of love that took years to assemble is this terrific ensemble of Quaker Oats premium photos, available to consumers during a nine-year period, with our consignor reporting that the Toronto Maple Leafs portion of the issue is complete. That means all the variations and more difficult to locate examples are indeed present. There are numerous highlights and more valuable pictures to tell you about starting with Max Bentley posed in front of his locker, considered one of the most difficult images to track down. The team photo of the three-time Stanley Cup champion Maple Leafs, Syl Apps and Ted Kennedy with Lord Stanley’s trophy, goalies Frank McCool, Gordie Bell, Baz Bastien and Harry Lumley and four different of Turk Broda are notable/desirable. A wonderful image of a young Tim Horton in action, three of Bill Barilko and scarce photos of Doug Baldwin, Mel Hill, Phil Maloney, Elwin Morris and Babe Pratt are also noteworthy. The 8” by 10” pictures, on paper stock, display well in binder pages, with almost-standard light bends visible in many upon closer inspection while some examples show things such as toning, foxing/stains, creases, handwritten notations in pen or pencil, pin holes, edge/corner wear and very small edge tears. Overall, none of the photos in the group would be described in our opinion as obscene unsightly examples not worthy of this beautiful and seldom seen assembly.
For the notable photos, surface dents/wrinkles are to note over the examples of Apps, Bentley and Kennedy along with the typically seen light bends and creases while the Apps and Kennedy images also sport light rips to the top edges. Additionally, a small pencil annotation reading "TML" is seen on the reverse of the Kennedy image. For the image of Frank McCool, similar light surface dent and wrinkles are observed along with a pin hole at the top and a light corner crease at the top left while a handwritten pen notation is present on the reverse. Moving on, Pratt's image sports the same surface dents/wrinkles (something present throughout the key examples), along with a couple of light creases while the Elwin Morris photo shows light stains/foxing on the reverse and a couple of small corner creases. On the Maloney and Hill examples, both with pleasing fronts, light corner wear is observed over both while the Hill sports light creases and bends along with some minor soiling/smudging on the reverse. For the rest, including the likes of Doug Baldwin, Gordon Bell, George Armstrong, Bill Barilko, the team photo, Baz Bastien, Harry Lumley and Tim Horton, most are in the range of G to VG with a couple a bit better while showing the commonly seen bends, wrinkles and creases, while Baldwin has a pin hole at the top and a small tear to go along with light spots on the reverse, Bell has a trio of small tears and writing on the back, Armstrong has a tape mark on the front and damage to the top right with writing on the back, the team photo displays with heavier toning than most and a small tear, Bastien has light smudging on the reverse and Lumley has glue and paper residue on the reverse.
Additionally also included with the lot are items related to the photos such as an original mailing envelope, an advertisement for them (not original) and various Maple Leafs Bantam Hockey Club booklets plus an affiliate certificate. a nice touch that increases the perusing enjoyment, he new owner will indeed enjoy this comprehensive Maple Leafs Quaker Oats collection.
