Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023

Drafted 2nd overall in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft by the Kansas City Scouts, the first player selected by the organization, Wilf Paiement would go on to a National Hockey League career that spanned a total of 946 games with seven (7) different clubs and become known for being the last player other than Wayne Gretzky to don the number "99", occurring when he was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Offered here, we present this photo-matched Maple Leafs jersey worn by Paiement during the 1980-81 season. A rarely seen Sandow SK mesh construction offering with faded brand and washing instructions tagging affixed to the inner collar, the size "Extra Large" garment hails from a set worn by the Leafs in the latter part of the season and was the only year this style was worn. Featuring the Sandow SK logo screened over the reverse hem, the front is decorated with a Maple Leafs team crest that has had "Toronto Maple Leafs" embroidered into it while matching alternate logo crests have been added over each shoulder. Accented over the sleeves and verso with Paiement's number "99" in single layer tackle twill numerals, "Paiement" is spelt out across the affixed matching nameplate in single layer white twill letters. Of note, the jersey at one point had a longer nameplate affixed to it with evidence of such seen on both ends of the upper reverse and it is not known if this one is the original that was cut down (shorter nameplates are seen on other examples from the same season) or if it is one that was made up and affixed. Exhibiting good game-wear, stick marks and board burns are seen over the front, reverse and both sleeves while team repairs total twelve (12) by our count and are found over the right sleeve (x5), left sleeve (x6) and reverse (x1) with one through the crest on the left shoulder and one through the first "9" on the reverse. Sporting additional wear seen via some spot stains throughout, a loop style fight strap has been utilized on the interior. Accompanied by a MeiGray LOA and COR, the jersey has been photo-matched with Getty Image #51815601 (April 1981 - Stanley Cup Finals Preliminary Round) to various board burns and team repairs seen on Paiement's right sleeve and elbow.
