Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

A Stanley Cup champion with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992, Ken Wregget’s NHL journey began when he was drafted 45th overall in 1982 by the Toronto Maple Leafs, the club he would play 200 of his 575 National Hockey League games for during the first six (6) years of his NHL tenure. Offered here, is this Maple Leafs jersey worn by Wregget during the 1987-88 season in which he played in 56 regular season games and 2 playoff contests. Made by CCM, partially detached Maska Ultrafil and born-on date tags reading “86 07” remain affixed to the inner collar, indicating that the jersey was a left over from the previous season that was never used and put into service a year later, something seen on numerous other Toronto examples. Appearing to be all original with no evidence of any prior nameplate or patches, the jersey measures out to roughly a size “52” and displays a red, white and blue CCM logo that has been embroidered into the reverse hem. Decorated over the front with a satin twill Maple Leafs team crest that has “Toronto Maple Leafs” and other details embroidered into it, the shoulders have been accented with matching Maple Leaf crests on each side. Having had Ken’s number “31” sewn to the sleeves and verso in single layer white or blue twill numerals, “Wregget” has been spelt out in matching style across the affixed matching nameplate. Attributed to having been used during the 1988 Stanley Cup Playoffs in which Wregget only played in two (2) of six (6) games, the jersey shows light wear via a couple of marks through the team crest and over the reverse right side with a shallow cut near the stem of the leaf of the front and a stick mark/board burn through the leaf on the right shoulder. Additionally, good pilling is seen throughout the interior, which has had the fight strap cut out of it (something consistent with other Wregget offerings), and some staining is seen throughout, heaviest around the left sleeve and shoulder. Adding to the appeal around it, Getty Image #502543949 (April 10th, 1988 vs Detroit - 1988 Norris Division Semi-Finals) appears to show similarities to the nameplate including the angling at the top of the "W", the way the first "G" angles into the first "E" towards the bottom and the different sizes of "G's"
