Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/28/2023
Scarce pre-war collectibles feature well-known poses of some of the era’s top stars, with collectors/gum chewers back in the day having to save 50(!) “Ice King” wrappers and one premium wrapper to be able to send away for one of the big 7” by 9” premium cards, printed on thick card stock. Presented here in near complete set form with five (5) of the six (6) available examples being present, only the photo of Hap Day is missing to make a complete assembly. Including photos for Howie Morenz, Hooley Smith, King Clancy, Aurel Joliat and Allan Shields, the images of Morenz, Smith and Joliat all show liquid stains over both the front and reverse while exhibiting creases, corner wear/dings, edge wear and pinholes as well. On the Morenz example, a small tear is seen to the right edge with areas of paper loss on the reverse as well. For the Joliat card, the worse off of the bunch, heavy staining and creasing is seen along with a couple of tears that includes the top right corner. For the photos of Clancy and Shields, both the best of the five grade wise, the pair shows moderate even toning throughout, pinholes at the tops and bottoms, light surface wear and residue staining, marks on the reverses, corner wear/dings and edge wear while the Shields example has a crease extending up from the bottom edge at the heel of his stick. For condition ranges, the Joliat is in the vicinity of PR, the duo of Morenz and Smith are both in the scope of PR to FR, the Shields is seen as FR to G and the Clancy is the best, being in the proximity of GOOD.
