Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023

Established as one of the twelve (12) founding teams of the newly formed World Hockey Association to directly complete with the rival and more established National Hockey League, the Alberta/Edmonton Oilers cemented their legacy in 1978 when they signed a young phenom by the name of Wayne Gretzky to a contract. Joining the NHL from the WHA for the 1979-80 season along with the Quebec Nordiques, New England Whalers and Winnipeg Jets, the Oilers have gone on to win five (5) Stanley Cup's and are the only one of the four teams that remains in their original city, never having been relocated. Offered here, we present this mid-to-late-1970s WHA Edmonton Oilers game-worn jersey. Void of any manufacture tagging affixed to the inner collar though the outline of one from Maska can bee seen on the inside of the neck, the jersey when measures is found to be roughly a size "46" in this case. With the team having worn Maska made garments during the second half of the 1976-77 season and the first half of 1977-78 campaign before switching to Rawlings, the front of the jersey is decorated with an Oilers team crest that has been administered in layered tackle twill while the sleeves and verso have been accented with the number "23" in dual layer blue-over-orange tackle twill numerals. Through research, we can see that during the era the jersey was worn in, the number "23" was donned by Dennis Patterson in 1976-77 (23 games played), Jim Troy in 1977-78 (47 games played) and "Hanson Brother", Steve Carlson, who wore the number during the 1978-79 season and has signed over the front with a black marker ink signature that displays without issue. Featuring a shortened hem and evidence of three (3) former nameplates over the top of the reverse, it should be noted that photos of Carlson showing him during his time in Edmonton show him wearing a jersey that has a different number font and no shortened hem. Exhibiting good game wear, stick marks are seen over the front, reverse and both sleeves with the sleeves also showing board burns over both as well. Sporting team repairs at the right side seam as well as at the bottom of the collar and a couple of small unrepaired holes over the front, the reverse shows a good sized board burn to the right of the number "3" that has resulted in an unrepaired hole as well. With some staining near each cuff and pilling throughout, the interior includes a loop style fight strap and good pilling. The last photo on the listing shows Dennis Patterson wearing a jersey with the hem shortened at the same height and correct placement of the number on the left sleeve so the jersey was most likely worn by him during the second half of the 1976-77 season.
