The kings of the gridiron in the National Football League were once again the lone subjects in Topps’ 1962 football release after players in both the NFL and AFL were featured in the set the year before. Sporting a checklist of 176-cards, up for grabs here is this complete assembly of Topps’ 1962 football offerings. Led by a quartet of graded cards that includes PSA EX-MT 6’s of Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor, NM 7’s are found of John David Crow and Bill Barnes to round out the group. An overall VG to VG-EX condition set with light border wear present throughout, cards that are of a noticeably lower grade include #’s 2, 23, 26, 33, 37, 41 (Don Perkins RC), 65, 79 and 104-Gifford. Led by key first-year cardboard specimens of 17-Ditka (VG to VG-EX – light corner wear), 36-Davis (VG to VG-EX – light border wear and a dent at the top border – short print) and 90-Tarkenton (VG to VG-EX – tiny crease at top left), other cards in the same condition range include 5-Berry (light corner wear), 39-Meredith, 63-Starr (completely off-center), 76-Checklist (unmarked – very small crease at left side), 88-Gabriel (RC – light corner wear), 92-McElhenny and 176-Checklist (unmarked – light corner wear). The last two card of note include a VG-EX to EX copy of the lead off man, Johnny Unitas that is off-center 70-30 and has light border wear while card #28 of Jim Brown is worse off in the scope of G to VG largely due to a crease at the top left. A classic assembly bound to please the lucky winning bidder, don’t let these pass you by!
