Playing with the Val-d'Or Foreurs of the QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League), it was Roberto Luongo’s performance at the 1997 CHL Top Prospects Game that earned him the title of “franchise goaltender” from NHL Central Scouting director, Frank Bonello. Drafted that summer by the New York Islanders at 4th overall, up for grabs here is this New York Islanders jersey worn by “Bobby Lu” during Islanders training camp and pre-season before the start of the 1997-98 campaign. Sporting both CCM “Goalie Style” and size “60” flag tags affixed to the inner collar, the rear hem has been decorated with embroidered logos of both CCM and the NHL shield. Decorated over the front with the well-known Islanders team crest and matching lighthouse alternate logo patches over each shoulder, the sleeves and verso have been accented with the number “40” in wavy tri-layer tackle twill numerals. Showing “Luongo” spelt out in single layer navy twill kiss-cut letters across the affixed matching wavy nameplate at the top of the reverse, the jersey exhibits light wear via some stick/puck marks over the lower front, a small running stain under the “4” on the right sleeve and some salting to the fight strap. Dated and signed on the interior behind the team crest in black marker by Islanders equipment man, Joe McMahon, the annotations alongside the autograph read “97-98 - #32” with it being unknown what “#32” means as no number change appears on the jersey and it is far too big for it to have been intended for Trevor Linden who wore the number during that regular season. The jersey comes accompanied by an Islanders LOA signed by then GM Mike Milbury.
